Description
Research Overview
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA. It is studied as part of the signaling system through which mitochondria communicate changes in cellular energy and metabolic stress.
Preclinical research has investigated MOTS-c in connection with AMPK signaling, glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, metabolic homeostasis, skeletal-muscle function, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and cellular responses to metabolic stress. Much of the evidence in these areas comes from cell and animal models.
Human research is considerably more limited. Studies have examined naturally occurring MOTS-c in exercise, aging, and metabolic conditions, but current evidence does not establish that findings from experimental models translate into therapeutic effects in humans.
Important research distinction: Findings from cell and animal models should not be interpreted as demonstrating that an Atlas MOTS-c research product produces those effects in humans.
