The gray market for peptides is having its biggest year ever — and its least careful one.

Chainalysis, the blockchain-analysis firm, tracked cryptocurrency payments to gray-market peptide vendors and found about $32 million flowed in during the first quarter of 2026 alone — up roughly 159% from the quarter before. The market is on pace to cross a $100 million annual run rate this year, up from roughly $1 million a quarter in 2024. Growth like that means one thing above all: a flood of first-time buyers.

Now the other number in the same report. Spending on independent testing — buyers sending vials to a third-party lab to check what’s actually inside — has collapsed per buyer, down an estimated 88% to about $8 a buyer. The lab Chainalysis tracked is actually testing more product than ever. There are just so many more buyers that the checking per person has fallen off a cliff.

Read those two numbers together and you have the whole problem with this market in one picture: more people buying, less verification per purchase, and a growing habit of trusting the certificate the seller hands you. A vendor-supplied certificate is not independent testing. It is the seller grading their own homework — and reporting on the gray market notes those certificates often don’t screen for sterility at all.

This is not an abstract risk. When nobody checks the vial, nobody can tell a mislabeled product from a real one until someone gets hurt — and the harm stories in the news this week all share that same missing piece: no verified test report for the vial that was actually used.

There is a simple standard that fixes this, and it isn’t complicated. A named, independent lab. A report tied to the specific lot in the vial, not a generic certificate from some other batch. A way for the buyer to verify the report with the lab before paying. My Tesamorelin page carries exactly that: a Freedom Diagnostics report — 99.70% purity, identity confirmed — one tap, straight to the lab’s own PDF, no code to type and no portal to log into. The Retatrutide page does the same for its purity report and its endotoxin certificate. Where a batch of mine is still waiting on its report, I say that too, because “tested” should mean a document you can open, not a word on a label.

The honest grade on the market right now: demand is compounding faster than diligence. Sellers who test every batch and show the paperwork are not doing extra credit — they are doing the minimum a buyer should accept. If a seller can’t show you a lot-matched, third-party report, the discount isn’t a deal. It’s the price of not knowing.

Read the trial before you buy the vial. And read the COA before you trust the label.
